The schedule

Okay, first of all, I think I’m going to start each of these 31 for 21 posts with a fact about Down syndrome. Here’s today’s fact: 80% of babies with Down syndrome are born to women under 35. (Because women under 35 have more babies.)

Now, on to today’s topic: Daniel’s schedule. In short, it is killing me. For a while he was getting up once during the night, any time between 1 and 5 am. Then he would wake for the day sometime between 5:30 and 7. That schedule was fine. He’s a baby, I pretty much expect him to be up in the night. Then he moved on to no middle of the night wakings, but waking for the day between 4:45 and 5:15. After a couple weeks of that I resigned myself to the fact that he would NOT be going back to sleep. I started going to bed at 9 and just staying up when he woke at 4:45. I did yoga after feeding him instead of bothering to try to get him back to sleep. That lasted about a week. Now he wakes sometime between 4 and 4:30 am. YOU GUYS. I cannot make myself think 4:00 am is an acceptable time to get up. But he won’t go back to sleep! And I don’t mean he won’t go back to sleep right away. I mean, he gets up at 4 am and then takes his first nap at like 11! It’s crazy!

I’d ask you for advice, but I’ve tried everything so I’m just going to hope it’s a phase. P.S. Keeping him up an hour later (which is almost impossible, btw) leads to approximately 15 minutes more of sleep in the morning. So, NO.

UGH. It’s a good thing he’s cute.

  1. That super sucks! I hope it’s a short phase! Maybe he’s getting teeth?? I see that his hair is laying flat these days. He’s looking so big and handsome.

    • I don’t know about the teeth. I think he’s just trying to slowly torture me to death. Also, yes. His hair does lay nice and flat these days. Still looks like an old-man combover though.

  2. The sleep thing is so challenging. You have a good attitude. It’s so hard. I think it sucks too. 4 is too early. so is 5, but what can I do? He’s a very handsome boy!!

  3. We had that insane early waking business at our house too. Thankfully it was a phase. Now Anna sleeps until 615 or 630 which is ok with me. Hope it passes quickly for you!

  4. So my advice would be to keep him up later at night. But clearly that’s stupid advice since a) it sounds like you already tried it, and b) he won’t stay awake. Which is crazy to me. I cannot wrap my head around this idea that a baby won’t stay awake. We always have to do something to get Ruby to sleep. So I will just wish you luck instead. And add that Jason gets up at 2:45 when he works days. Isn’t that crazy???
